This Month October 2024 - Monday, 30 Sep 2024

I look out on a misty mizzly morning wondering how I will catch up with the work. There is so much to do but, not only, is it no pleasure working in such weather conditions at also does not do my health any favours. I still have to finish digging potatoes, only one quarter harvested so far, not a bad crop, not the best but not bad nonetheless. I must put the tender pots in the greenhouse soon although it is still full of food crops, it looks like a bumper year for tomatoes but I expect I will have to pick a lot green and ripen them on windowsills.
I have a lot of planting out to do and as I am soon to go to another plant fair I have no doubt that there will be more. I am also mulling over a new planting scheme for one area and with the species of plants I have in mind that will entail buying more plants.
I need some good dry days to get on with tidying herbaceous beds, I cannot leave it all until late winter as my job list at that time of year is already overloaded. I dread having to put it off too much longer as it makes my hands colder than I can bear due to damp foliage.
I still have some apples to pick but it needs to be dry weather for that job too. I guess there is always housework but that will be a last resort as it is something which I cannot find any pleasure in whatsoever. It seems rather pointless when you know that in an extremely short space of time it will need doing again. Hey-ho, tomorrow is another day and it promises to be drier so I will put the kettle on and cross my fingers that I will have the energy to work even harder when it is dry.
For now I will think about where to plant all the pots full of wonderful new plants and what gaps I may have after that is done. I could think about what vegetables I could grow next near, for the last two years I have grown a celery which doesn’t need blanching and that has been quite successful so I will grow those again. I could also think whether I would like to put more bulbs in… of course I would like to put in more bulbs however I planted quite a lot last year and I am not sure where I can plant more. I just looked at the piece of paper with the list of plants waiting to go into the ground and thought it didn’t look too many but then I turned the page over!
I look outside for the zillionth time this morning and wonder if I should have stayed in bed with my book for a while longer. I am sure it will improve soon even if I only have time to dig one more variety of spuds it will be something done today, but perhaps I had better find a duster and at least pretend I am doing something useful.
