This Month

This Month November 2024 - Wednesday, 30 Oct 2024

I have been making the most of the drier mild weather by doing a lot of planting out and clearing areas. I do leave some seed heads until spring but cannot leave it all until then or I will not have time to do it. I am putting some Asters in the gaps for late colour. I am also creating a new area with dwarf conifers. I planted a beautiful pendulous fir above the sunken garden some years ago and recently bought a small pendulous fir with no idea where to plants it until I had the idea for a new bed. I had two other dwarf firs which were starting to get overwhelmed by giants in another area so I have moved them, fingers crossed they will thrive in their new position. I may treat myself to a day out to buy a few more to complete my planting scheme.
I did go to a plant fair recently but was very restrained only buying a dozen new plants. One of these is Aucuba himalaica Dalichophylla which has very fine leaves. I planted it in the shrubberies surrounding the Oak circle along with Sarcococca wallichii that I had bought at another plant fair but not previously decided where to place it. The Sarcococca has rounded leaves, unlike others that I have.
I have three new Hellebore all with green flowers but of different shapes and markings but I have not yet decided where to plant them. I am having difficulty thinking of places where there are not already Hellebores in close proximity. Perhaps I need to take time to have a walk around without doing any work at the same time but with so much to do at the moment I don’t get around to an idle amble.
I do have a few other things to plant out but that may amount be added to soon!
There is one area where I took a pitiful plum tree out, it had never fruited very well and the wind snapped half of it off this year. It is in the little patch where I have been planting massed shrubs. I was tempted to put an ornamental tree in its place but the new shrubs behind now get more sunlight so if I put a tree it would be something small casting minimal shade or maybe I could put a sculpture or just a few low shrubs. I want to leave a path around the outside so the shrubs behind are not hidden, I will ponder it a while longer.
I am so busy and desperately want to catch up with the jobs whilst the weather is good that I even strimmed some herbaceous areas. As well as saving time it also saves a lot of energy and strain on my back and I am sure that the areas will be no worse from this method. I am not doing it in all the flower beds but just where I think it will not cause problems in the future.
I am so looking forward to my day out visiting some nurseries, I hope I find some nice new acquisitions.
