You do not need me to tell you how warm it has been. I have been having a longer lunch break but getting up and working early in the morning and late in the evening. I cannot sit for long even in the high humidity. There has been plenty of jobs in the shady shrubberies to keep me occupied although early in the morning I have been doing some gardening in the open spaces. In some of the open areas of long grass pink, blue and white Geraniums roll through, however in other areas the grass had grown so much it hid some of the perennials. This is mostly the old Damson patch, now mostly young Acers, when these trees grow it will shade the grass out a little so the perennials have more chance to flourish. In this area I had to work by hand to clear the grass around the flowers, many had spread more than I had expected. There are big patches of Hellebore, several Hemerocallis and Crocosmia for summer colour, and a succession of bulbs. It is good to see light clouds of butterflies in the lower garden over other areas of long grass, showing how much better it is for insects to leave lawns to grow long and just mow paths through.
Cornus kousa Norman Hadden is looking wonderful, the white bracts are now turning pink. Callistemon (Bottle Brush) is very floriferous with the bright red brushes of flowers cascading down.
I am still doing a little summer pruning of dead branches and general tidying. The vegetable garden has been hard work and now in need of rain. The mice decimated my young peas and broad beans and some of the other small plants grown in the greenhouse were very slow to grow large enough to plant out. This means I have had a longer thin gap than usual and it is not easy finding organic vegetables to buy. I do not want to resort to vegetables which have been grown using chemicals as we know they are not only damaging to soil health and wildlife but also to our health.
I am hoping I will be able to relax more through July and August, I will have to find some good books to keep me occupied although I feel I should be getting on with some housework I do not like being indoors. It does take a very good book to banish housework from my mind, hey ho the dust will be back in a blink of an eye anyway so another day will not hurt.
Lets go and do some gardening instead, far more fun.
