I don’t know whether I am coming or going, it definitely feels like two steps forward and one step back and juggling too many plates at once. I never got around to going to any Snowdrop Gardens, I admit the weather put me off as I do not get too much pleasure from walking around gardens in the rain. I am doing a lot of projects but not all are working on the garden, unfortunately for a lot of these I need help as they are too heavy for me.
In the garden I have been continuing with the pruning but hope to finish soon, although there are still the Buddleia and Hydrangeas to do. I must split some of the Snowdrop clumps, I did do 3 times as many last year as I usually do so I will not feel so bad if I don’t do so many this year. I am finding it harder doing the bending jobs so I am having to review many of they.
There is a lot of moss which I like in most places, however I do need to do a fair bit of work to get it off the paths. This will be done by scraping some off, using a stiff broom and pressure washing. Never a very pleasant job but it must be done.
I don’t know when it will be dry enough to move all the many piles of wood around the garden. There has been more trees to remove than I had hoped. One trunk of a mature twin-trunked Paulownia had died so we took that down. There has been three Holly trees to take down. Plus several other trees over the winter, none of them were planned.
The Daffodils are looking fabulous with more opening every day. I planted a lot of Crocus bulbs which is giving lovely patches of colour in the grass. The Hellebores are stunning. With the early spring shrubs starting to flower the vibrancy and colour is increasing daily. I must be sure to take time to regularly walk around to enjoy it. I am very pleased how well the Aspidestra are looking, most of them are in one shrubbery area and even the ones I planted just a few months ago seem well settled in.
I started planting the chicken pen with exotic plants last year, including three different Brassaiopsis, which some gardeners, even in south England, are not planted outside. They do not seem at all unhappy about the winter weather we have had. It is probably the most sheltered spot in the garden. I do have a few plants which I over-wintered in the greenhouse and I will harden these off soon to also plant in the chicken pen.
I was relaxing and in the middle of eating my lunch today when a phone call resulted in leaving the rest a while as local BBC radio were asking if I could help them out. Their expected gardener of the day had to cancel so they were contacting their other radio gardeners to answer the phone-in questions. I was happy to help out but due to a bad signal I had to walk uphill a little way, I am glad it wasn’t raining. I usually do it on zoom but there wasn’t time as I was on air within a couple of minutes of them first contacting me.
I have also been giving more garden talks to clubs recently, I think I have just two left but then it is in to the garden group visits to the garden. There certainly isn’t much time to sit and relax lately.
