The days are getting cooler now so to keep warm I have to work faster, put more layers of clothes on and carry dry wood to get the fires going. I have been trying to get the jobs which make my gloves wet as soon as I start doing them finished and out of the way quickly. On the worst days I ought to be doing housework, there is plenty to do, however I usually can’t summon up much energy or enthusiasm for that. I have been clearing out things I don’t use, a lot of them are broken but some just because I cannot manage them anymore. As I am continually changing my ways of work to make it lighter so I have decided a lot of tools are surplice to requirements and cluttering sheds.
We have cut the big fig tree right to base. It grows so much every year thus needing to be pruned two or three times to stop it damaging the smithy roof. The aim is to cut it just once a year, but I haven’t decided whether that will be to the ground or to a height where I do not need to either bend down or stretch too high.
We have also been doing serious hacking back on the terrace. There is an evergreen Rose which grows so fast and creates a difficult pruning job. I am loath to remove it completely as it has a long flowering season and I am not sure what would grow in its place. The trunk is aged and gnarled and adds character to the terrace but the top has had at least three-quarters removed. The next job was to clear all that debris away, ouch ouch! I now have to think about the state of the trellis as some of the top poles have lost their newness and need replacing. The question is what to replace them with, metal poles would last longer but may look too industrial. I could use wood again but over time they too will rot, however someone pointed out that if they last 20 years they will see me out and so not be my problem, I wasn’t quite sure how to answer that! While we were working in that area we stopped a while to watch a Goldcrest, a beautiful little bird.
There is a gap near the veranda where I would like to put something colourful over a fairly long season, however it needs to be about 8 - 10ft and not too much spread. There will be the perfect plant but it has not yet entered my mind. I do, of course, have plenty of plants in pots waiting to go in the ground but none of them are suitable for here. Now I must pluck up courage to get outside and start planting even though I have no idea where most of them should go.
