In the last two weeks I have made up for not getting many new plants in recent months. However it was imperative that I should get them and I knew exactly where they were all to be planted. Most are for the Chook Pen as many require some shelter. I walked into the pen on a day when there was a chill wind and it was a different climate, the wind dropped and it felt warm and, almost, humid. The new plants for the chook pen include Neopanax, Pseudopanax, Aralias and Schefflera, all lovely shrubs I bought for their leaves. For under-planting there are more ground Orchids from Japan and hardy Ginger as well as several woodlanders.
For other areas I got Magnolia Macrophylla for its large leaves, Toona sinensis Flamingo for its pinkish-coloured leaves and Alchornea davidii which is a new plant to me, it has peachy leaves.
I am still planting vegetable seeds, a bit later than usual. I am also finding bits of pruning that I had missed, however most of them are not fully hardy and as we have been having late frosts they are probably better for being left a while.
Now in the day between starting and finishing writing this I have been to yet another plant fair, it is that time of year when there are quite a lot. I only bought a few more plants and nearly all of these are herbaceous perennials for the shady chook pen. The only shrub I got is Rubus rosifolius Coronarius, it has double white flowers. I am not sure where I will put it as it may get cut by frost and so will need a sheltered position but I do not want to put it in the chook pen. When I got home I spent the afternoon and evening planting out.
Now it is early morning and I am determined to put in a whole day without skiving off to buy plants. I
Have to go down the bottom of the garden to do a little pruning I had missed, I must do some work in the kitchen garden and I intend to mow the wider paths and possibly strim the narrow paths. I have checked the water supply and already it is slow so it will be a difficult summer for the vegetables and the household. It is very frustrating that people can dig boreholes with no check to what the water situation is in the area. Those boreholes are to keep a large herd of cattle permanently indoors which require not only their drinking water but also a vast amount to wash down the sheds. Just one more reason that I do not buy milk which is not organic. The way the climate is changing water will be even more serious for national and international populations, it is increasingly hard to grow crops on both small and large scale enterprises.
I am now heading into the garden where, even though I cannot put the water issue totally out of mind, I can at least take pleasure chatting to the plants and admiring their beauty. The garden really does look fantastic now with the many flowering shrubs.
