I felt the garden was holding its breath and was waiting. When we had an unexpected shower of rain at the end of July there was not that deep sigh of relief as, although the rain was welcomed, it was not an amount to let the plants relax from their tense attitude.
There will be some gaps to fill by the end of the year from plants removed but there are several in pots waiting to be planted out. I have already started to take out ones which will not recover but I know it will be a busy winter. A recent trip out increased the new plants with Catalpa ovata, an Indian Bean Tree with yellow flowers. Viburnum lantana Aureum has large golden leaves and creamy-white flowers. Mahonia sinensis with attractive leaves which have bronze tints as they emerge. Hemiboea subcapitata (False Sinningia) is a rare woodland perennial from south-east China. It grows to about 1-1.5ft (30-45cm), it has glossy dark green leaves and tubular white flowers with a purple spotted throat in autumn.
Whilst many plants in the garden look tired others, such as the Hibiscus shrubs, look great with larger flowers than I usually expect to see. The Hemerocallis and Agapanthus also help to brighten the garden.
I have decided to start strimming the long grass in some areas, however other areas are still full of butterflies and so will be left long for a few more weeks. Apart from that I am just pottering around the garden, in the shade, waiting for a change in weather. I should make a note of all the jobs I need to do in the autumn and winter as there will be a lot and I am sure to forget some. I have noticed how well the Phlomis russeliana has seeded under some Conifers so I will transplant some to another area of Fir trees where plants usually struggle to get a foothold.
The heat has meant my afternoons have been idle with no energy to get me moving and no urge to go out to visit other gardens. Having said that, I did have a trip to RHS Harlow Carr which I enjoyed immensely, I felt it was a lovely garden with a nice feel about it. I also had a day at Blenheim Palace by invitation of the RHS for talks, a guided tour by the head gardener and lunch, a very interesting day.
This month I need to decide on my general open days for 2027 as well as the NGS open dates. This year I am opening one day in October for the NGS for the autumn colours and I may do likewise next year but I am debating whether to continue having an August open day. I have started taking bookings for talks and for group visits for next year so if you are in a group do book early to get your preferred date.
