The garden is looking fabulous with the Daffodils looking better than ever this year, I love seeing the carpets of yellow as it brings sunshine even on a cloudy day. Add to those the floriferous Acacia pravissima, Primroses popping up all around the garden, along with a yellow Magnolia and the Sophora opening their flower buds there is even more yellow. It is not the only colour in the garden, there are the blues of Scilla and Pulmonaria, pinks of Rhododendrons, Camellias and Rubus spectabilis. I must find time to have a walk around to see what else if flowering. Unfortunately sometimes there is so much to do that I get my head down to continually work and so days disappear with me forgetting to take a stroll or relax on the seats.
I am pleased that I didn’t prune the less hardy plants too early as we have been getting a few frosts however I will aim to do them soon. The plan is to plant vegetables in the mornings and prune in the afternoons with a little planting out and other odd jobs whenever I have a moment to spare.
I had a very exciting trip to a nursery with a lot of hardy exotic plants. I expect they will see me visiting there again quite soon. You may know that I have a passion for leaves and already had three Brassaiopsis which have all over-wintered planted out in the garden. I now have two more, Brassaiopsis mitis and B. fatsioides. I also bought two more Schefflera and several low plants including hardy ground Orchids, Asarum Ling Ling and some ferns. Most of these new plants are now in the new Chook Pen garden. All the plants I put into this new area last year seem to have come through the winter well so I am a happy bunny. I recently bought a Magnolia Black Tulip but have no idea where to plant it. I also have a Camellia Mercury variegated, I bought it as I like the red flowers with white flecks, I am not so crazy on the leaf variegation. I am thinking about planting it in the Spring Garden near where there is a Camellia which is white with red flecks. They will help to soften the view of a new large water tank which I have put in to collect water in winter in the hope it will see me through any summer droughts.
I keep thinking I am keeping up with the jobs then remember something I have forgotten but now the weather is not so wet I am sure I will soon get around to them all. This morning I think I had better head for the kitchen garden even though I would much rather be working in the ornamental areas.
Now is the time to be out visiting gardens so don’t put it off until summer to start going to them.
