I am sure it is only about 5 minutes since I wrote for February, where has that time gone. Unfortunately yet again the backache was a problem, I am having to cut right back on physical voluntary work as I have to put all my energy into my gardening here.
I didn’t get to visit many Snowdrop gardens however with my disgraceful behaviour lately I will only need to walk around Moors Meadow to see many varieties of Galanthus as I now have at least 60, I am not a Galanthophile! The snowdrops seemed a bit later here than the gardens I did go to which meant the weather was warmer and the days longer by the time the snowdrops were at their best here, therefore I was spending more time outside to enjoy seeing them as I worked. I hope to find time and energy to split a few clumps as I do most years.
I haven’t many other new plants apart from some Camellia I found going for a song in a garden centre. These are really useful for shady areas where I have lost trees this year. Whilst down the Lower Garden planting out just this morning I still had time to spend on another job and decided to start clearing the dry stream bed. By the end of the morning I was plastered in mud as with recent weather the dry stream bed was wet, at least it was a warm day. There were a lot of large twigs blown into it as well as leaves so it will take two or three days to finish if I do a couple of hours each day. It is good seeing the rock waterfalls becoming visible again.
I am in the process of finishing the pruning and will be pleased when it is all done although I expect I will be finding odd plants I have missed for a few weeks. I am not sure how long some of the older Buddleias will survive as they are starting to look a bit aged and decrepit. They may last another year or two but I will start to give a lot of thought to what I could replace them with when they have gone. I could just put in more Buddleia or my inclination is leaning towards planting this fairly sheltered spot with a mass of rarely seen plants.
The Narcissus are starting to flower so the garden will soon be heading from white drifts of Galanthus to the yellow of Daffodils. I am pleased to see the new patches of Crocus have pushed through the ground, I hope the birds do not pull the heads of the yellow ones off as they so often do.
The Rhododendrons are a bit later to come into flower this year, the first blooms usually start to open at the end of January. I don’t mind as, by flowering later they will be enjoyed by more visitors.
It is great to now feel some warmth in the air and the few sunny days have been wonderful, especially when the breeze is not sharp.
Most of the piles of wood have been moved from around the upper garden, although there is still quite a lot. I don’t know when it will be dry enough to bring in any more, and I expect it will be longer still until I can get it up from the lower garden. At least I have a good stockpile to help get the house warm in winter.
